H.E. Bhichai Rattakul stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of Rotary in Thailand and globally. A Past Rotary International President, Major Donor, and lifelong servant of the Rotary ideal, his six decades of dedication helped shape the growth and spirit of Rotary across generations.
From his beginnings as a charter member of the Rotary Club of Dhonburi in 1958 to becoming the first Thai President of Rotary International in 2002–03, his life was defined by leadership, humility, and an unwavering commitment to service above self.
H.E. Bhichai Rattakul: Thailand's Rotarian of the Century
In the long history of the Rotary Club of Bangkok, few figures have embodied the ideals of Rotary service as completely as H.E. Bhichai Rattakul — PRIP, Paul Harris Fellow, Major Donor, and Benefactor. From charter member of Thailand's second Rotary club in 1958 to President of Rotary International in 2002–03, his journey through the Rotary movement spanned six decades and left an indelible mark on the organisation in Thailand and across the world.
Early Life and Education
Bhichai Rattakul was born on 16 September 1924 in Bangkok into a Thai Chinese family. He received his education at Bangkok Christian College and subsequently at St Stephen's College in Hong Kong — a foundation that instilled in him the international outlook and personal discipline that would define his extraordinary life of service.
The Beginning: RC Dhonburi, 1958
Bhichai Rattakul's Rotary story began in 1958, when he became a charter member of the Rotary Club of Dhonburi — Thailand's second Rotary club and the first club to conduct its meetings in the Thai language. It was a fitting beginning for a man who would spend his life bringing Rotary's ideals to those around him in the most direct and personal way possible.
He served as President of RC Dhonburi in 1961–62, just three years after joining — an early indication of the leadership qualities that would define his entire Rotary career. In 1963–64 he became District Governor of District 330, providing guidance to clubs across the region at a time when the Rotary movement in Thailand was still finding its foundations.
Rising Through Rotary International
Bhichai Rattakul's ascent through Rotary International reflected both his personal dedication and the esteem in which the global Rotary community held him. He served as RI Director from 1990 to 1992, contributing to the governance of an organisation that by then spanned virtually every country on earth.
Then, in 2002–03, he was elected President of Rotary International — the first Thai Rotarian ever to hold that office. His presidential theme, "Sow the Seeds of Love," was a reflection of his character: warm, human, and rooted in a genuine belief in the power of fellowship and service to change lives. Following his presidency, he continued to serve Rotary at the highest level, becoming Chair of the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation in 2007–08.
His commitment to the Rotary Foundation as a donor was equally remarkable. He became a member of the Bequest Society at Level 1 in July 1991, and a Major Donor at Level 1 in April 2002 — contributions that helped sustain the Foundation's humanitarian work across generations.
A Member of the Rotary Club of Bangkok
In September 2017, the Rotary Club of Bangkok was honoured to welcome Bhichai Rattakul as a member. He was ninety-two years old. He was, by any measure, as active and purposeful as he had ever been — travelling the world to speak at Rotary events, attending monthly board meetings whenever he was in Bangkok, listening carefully and offering counsel with the precision and diplomacy of someone who had spent a lifetime in service.
"We felt honored to have his presence among us. And we all in the board learnt about diplomacy and when to speak out and when not to speak."
The club's annual reports from this period record the RI President's banner displayed with pride at every meeting. Incoming club presidents made a personal tradition of visiting him at his home before taking office, seeking his blessing and his counsel. His recommendations were offered with the same care and generosity whether the subject was a community project or the direction of the club's long-term ambitions.
In 2019, after two years with RC Bangkok, he returned to RC Dhonburi — the club he had helped to found more than sixty years earlier. Even from a distance, his connection to RC Bangkok endured. He continued to write personal messages of encouragement to incoming presidents, and his words carried the authority of a man who had served Rotary at every level it was possible to serve.
"This is a great honour to you and I know that you will serve well but, please bear in mind that this honour will carry with it the responsibility to serve the best you can for the betterment of mankind. And as you take up this assignment always remember that much depends on your fellow members... so treat them well and with humility."
— Bhichai Rattakul, message to an incoming RC Bangkok President, June 2021
Legacy
Bhichai Rattakul passed away on 28 February 2022 at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, from lung cancer, at the age of ninety-seven. He was accorded Royal Sponsored Bathing Rites, and a Royal Sponsored Cremation presided over by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was held on 17 September 2022 at Wat Dhebsirindharawas — a farewell befitting the national figure he had become.
In September 2024, members of the Rotary Club of Bangkok, joined by Rotarians from RC Okegawa and RC Ageo in Japan, made a fellowship visit to his grave in Hua Hin — a quiet but deeply felt act of remembrance that spoke to the bonds his life had created across borders and generations.
The club's tribute to him, written in the 2021–22 Annual Report, captured his standing simply and completely:
"In addition to his great sense of diplomacy, his keen interest in ordinary people and desire to help improve them, PRIP Bhichai had a great sense of humor. He is surely a great man who lived his life to the fullest with great accomplishments. We Rotarians have lost our hero and Thailand had lost a national treasure."
From charter member of Thailand's second Rotary club to President of Rotary International; from District Governor to Chair of the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation; from distinguished member of RC Bangkok to the inspiration of those who visited his grave to pay their respects — the life of Bhichai Rattakul was Rotary service lived in full.
